  The Schwartz lab investigates cellular, molecular and integrative mechanisms of growth regulation. We are examining growth hormone signaling to the nucleus by focusing on molecular mechanisms of gene transcription. Current directions include dissecting transcription regulatory complexes on target genes using techniques such as ChIP, and analyzing signaling mechanisms by which transcription regulatory proteins are modified (eg phosphorylation, acetylation, sumoylation). Since growth hormone can induce insulin resistance and diabetes, we are combining bioinformatics and physiological approaches to identify a potential genetic program for insulin resistance. We are also applying our understanding of molecular mechanisms of growth regulation to integrative studies of a population with short stature in Papua New Guinea.
