My laboratory has historically focused on two very key areas of bacterial physiology. Firstly, we have focused on defining the spatial organization of polar complexes in bacteria. Understanding how and why protein complexes localize to particular cellular locations, such as the cell poles, is fundamentally important for many aspects of microbial life. Secondly, we have been elucidating the role of conserved proteins that bind to GTP. Our discoveries have led to a functional association between these proteins, the assembling ribosome and the response of bacteria to stress.

Students in the Maddock lab approach their project using a wide variety of techniques ranging from molecular genetics to proteomics.
