Prof. Ferris studies how the nervous system and musculoskeletal system interact to produce coordinated locomotion. He uses techniques from biomechanics, neurophysiology, and robotics to study neurologically intact and spinal cord injured individuals. The goals are to better understand how humans control walking and running, and then use that information to design better rehabilitation devices and strategies after musculoskeletal and neurological injury. Current projects in the laboratory include investigating human adaptation to robotic lower limb exoskeletons, using high density electroencephalography to localize brain activity during human locomotion, and building a brain-computer interface for control of lower limb prosthetics.
