About Us

The Fostering Innovation Grants (FIGs) Program provides all UMHS faculty and staff with an opportunity to obtain funding to implement innovative ideas, by awarding seed money for one- or two-year pilot projects. Since FIGs began in 2005, we have awarded over $1.3M to support more than 210 projects around the Health System. FIGs has had over 69 projects become implemented on a permanent basis within UMHS!

FIGs was developed with the support of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers Senior Management Team by the fifth group of participants in the Leadership Development Emerging Leaders Program. The Emerging Leaders Program was developed in 1997 to enhance leadership skills and competencies across the University of Michigan Health System. At the conclusion of the program, participants are required to complete a project that will advance leadership. FIGs awardees demonstrate leadership by taking the initiative to make improvements and bring innovative ideas to life!
