 DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH
My research program focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of Movement Disorders at a systems level. My primary interests are in Parkinson Disease and dystonia, including the disease processes themselves, mechanisms of therapeutic interventions, and the pathophysiology of treatment complications. To accomplish this, we use primarily in vivo electrophysiological and optogenetic techniques in awake, behaving animals. We are developing several lines of research, including: investigations of how basal ganglia physiology changes as motor deficits develop after dopamine-depleting lesions; the role of "motor" thalamus in cortical-basal ganglia loops; and the effects of acute dopamine suppression on motor control.
