Our research program is focused on a group of intracellular proteins termed the IAPs (inhibitors of apoptosis). The prototype IAP was originally described in baculoviruses, and cellular IAPs are now known to be highly evolutionarily conserved and are encoded by a large family of genes. IAPs have been implicated in a wide range of cellular processes including cell cycle control, ubiquitination and intracellular signaling, as well as the regulation of apoptotic cell death. Our goal is to understand the roles played by these factors in essential cellular processes, to assess how the expression and function of IAPs are altered in diseased states, particularly in neoplasia, lymphoproliferative diseases and metabolic disorders such as Wilson’s Disease, with the longer term goal of exploring the therapeutic potential of targeting specific IAPs in these disorders.
